Named as its European sail upcycling partner The partnership between North Sails and 727 Sailbags provides a second life and diverts old sails from ending in landfills. Posted on 31 Aug North Sails partners with 727 Sailbags Related Articles North Sails introduces North Learn to Foil AcademyĪ pathway to add wing foiling to a club or sailing school A turn-key solution for sailing clubs to easily integrate the world's fastest-growing watersport into club programming and engage young members. Questions about how the Helix Furling Gennaker will work on your boat? Contact your local North Sail expert to decide if this will turn into your favorite downwind cruising sail. And that's a lot more fun than starting the engine. A single downwind sail you can keep rigged and ready to go, the Helix Furling Gennaker will get you to that next harbor even when the wind shifts. This new cruising sail saves you storage space and money, and leaving it furled and ready to deploy saves aggravation. Make the move to the Helix Furling Gennakerįrom tight reaching to broad running angles, the Helix Furling Gennaker may replace both your Code Zero and your asymmetrical cruising spinnaker. When flying, the sail tacks in front of the genoa, but on a catamaran it can also fly from the windward hull, farther away from the mainsail's wind shadow. Top-down Helix furling wraps securely, and the built-in suncover protects the sail from UV damage at rest ( check out this video to see top-down Helix furling in action). When sails with large middles or low clews roll from the bottom up, the foot is sucked in first, dragging the clew forward and changing the sheet angle-which sometimes leaves the upper leech loose. You can leave it up and furled like a Code Zero, and top-down furling makes it far more reliable than a typical bottom-up furl. A pencil-thin proprietary Helix cable allows for top-down furling without the weight aloft of a traditional cable, and its flexibility eases both handling and stowage. Unlike a traditional furling sail that wraps around a stiff and heavy torque cable, the fabric provides most of the structure. The advances North Sails has made in structured luff technology and sail design are the key to making this all-new sail type work. How does the furling work for the Helix Furling Gennaker? If the wind goes back forward again, just snug up the halyard or tack line to tighten the luff and reduce the sail's depth. When the wind goes aft, release a little halyard or tackline and ease the sheet, and the luff will project out in front of a straight line between head and tack just like an asymmetric spinnaker. The Helix Furling Gennaker is much deeper than a Code Zero. How does the Helix Furling Gennaker compare to a Code Zero or Asymmetric Spinnaker? Plus, this new gennaker is top-down furling, giving you a tight, neat furl that protects the sail. Hoist it once and you have an easy-to-fly sail that will take you to that next harbor fast, even when your apparent wind angle is too far aft for your Code Zero reacher. The Helix Furling Gennaker combines the power of an asymmetric spinnaker with the convenience of a Code Zero. Regardless of whether you sail a monohull, multihull, or superyacht, I'm predicting it will become your new favorite cruising sail. Now a new gennaker gives you the best of both worlds. Unless you're on a long enough passage to justify all that work, the diesel will probably be your first choice. In the old days, you had two options for making it to your destination in time for cocktail hour: start the engine, or go below to lug a bulky spinnaker up to the foredeck. But there are many still standing and are highlights of the NYC skyline. Not all of the iconic NYC towers have survived the test of time - such as the Singer Building, which was unfortunately demolished. The first tall building in New York to use metal-cage construction was the Tower Building at 50 Broadway (demolished 1914), designed by architect Bradford Lee. Some of these massive towers are universally iconic (such as the Empire State Building in Manhattan), and NYC broke the world record for the world's tallest buildings multiple times. Today, most of the very tallest skyscrapers being built are located in Asia and the Middle East, but New York City pioneered the development of massive skyscrapers 100 years ago. The Empire State Building, completed in 1931, is arguably the most iconic skyscraper in NYC and had the tallest building record until 1970. Below, explore what led to their rise. The One World Trade Center is the tallest tower in NYC, surpassing the Empire State Building and was completed in 2014.Ĭentral Park Tower, completed in 2021, is now the second-tallest tower in the city and has the highest roof height outside of Asia. Super-talls and their historic neighbors have helped shape the iconic urban silhouette we associate with the city today. “Except for museum-building, which carries an aura of prestige, few hotshot architects are concentrating on anything else.” In New York City, those hotshots include Adrian Smith and Gordon Gill, James von Klemperer of Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates, and SHoP Architects, many of whom have created towers for the city’s now notorious Billionaire’s Row on 57th Street. “The mixed-use, sky-high super-tall is the building typology of the twenty-first century,” writes Nash in Sky-High. But they are also highly visible markers of exorbitant wealth, the power of real estate, and architectural innovation. 1883: Temple Court Building, New York City, New York, USA Built between 18, Temple Court Building (aka 5 Beekman Street) is the oldest skyscraper in the world still standing today. These pencil-thin towers are new points of interest in the built landscape. Though Chicago may have invented the skyscraper, New York made it famous, and then took it to its extreme with the advent of the super-tall. It appears that this structural redundancy made the WTC towers initially withstand both the impact of the aircrafts and the following explosion. On July 18, 1974, the building was added to the list of National. In an area where the modern style of architecture is dominant, Delaware Building is among the few buildings that have managed to maintain its old style. A good structural design considers redundancy in structural components and systems. Many of you have probably never heard about the Singer Building or Singer Tower, but this 47-story office tower was the tallest building in the world from 1908 to 1909. The Delaware Building is among Chicagos earliest skyscrapers built in 1872 located in the citys central business district. Nash, author of forthcoming book Sky-High: A Critique of NYC’s Supertall Towers from Top to Bottom (Princeton Architectural Press, $40)-perhaps some hopeful architectural lasts. Nine stories high, the Home Life Insurance Building was the first structure whose entire weight, including the exterior walls, was supported on an iron frame. The key is built-in redundancy in all system components of a complex system such as a skyscraper. The Big Apple is known for its many impressive architectural firsts and-in the opinion of critic Eric P. Portions of the structure were added by Billiou’s daughter Martha and her husband, Thomas Stillwell, in the 1680s, as well as the Perine family in 1760, 1790, and 1830. This Dutch Colonial structure was built by Pierre Billiou. When it comes to recognizable skylines, New York City’s tops the list. Technically, you can instantly shut off Frey's magical parkour by pressing the button that puts her into a normal sprint-apparently, the two actions cancel each other out because using them both at once causes Frey to come to an abrupt halt. More than a few times, I found myself accidentally jetting past an item I wanted to pick up, or unintentionally racing up the wall of a building. Still, the lack of precision makes platforming or levels within enclosed spaces frustratingly difficult. This does create an enjoyable fluidity to movement and it's exhilarating to feel the world speed past you. Frey zips through the environment with stylish flips and jumps, moving so quickly that she skids to a halt. With not much keeping you within the last bastion of human life in Athia, you're encouraged to go out and explore the wider world, sprinting over fields with Frey's parkour abilities and blasting enemies away with explosive magic. My playthrough was filled with me constantly asking, "Yes, but why should Frey care?" and Forspoken never delivered a satisfying answer to the question. These people aren't fleshed out in Forspoken's story, and so the way they emotionally manipulate Frey isn’t all that believable or fulfilling to watch. We see Frey contemplate murderous vengeance over the death of a survivor she'd only just met, and feel guilty over belittling someone she has the slimmest of connections to. But the issue is exacerbated by how these people are characterized and used to inspire Frey. The facial expressions of the people in Athia are stilted and uncomfortable, which already creates a bit of a disconnect with the emotional core of Forspoken's story. They have no real convictions or anything interesting to say. The characters themselves are also incredibly plain with two-dimensional personalities. The characters don't take the threat of Athia's imminent destruction very seriously and any tension that comes from their perilous existence is repeatedly undermined by meaningless busywork they want you to do. The emotional connection Forspoken tries to establish to incentivize the player to take action-to help the people that need Frey's help-is deeply uninteresting and oftentimes head-scratching and odd. However, it's not a world that the game is able to adequately convince the player of wanting to stay in and protect. Like any isekai protagonist worth their salt, Frey is initially resistant to her new surroundings before discovering that she's actually ideally suited to the world she's found herself trapped in. It's difficult to like the standoffish and stubborn Frey, the incessantly sarcastic Cuff (who regularly quips in Frey's ear like a discount JARVIS), or any of the survivors who are all too eager to completely rely on Frey's protection from the Break while also asking her to complete boring optional tasks like going on a tour of a lifeless hub or petting a bunch of sheep.īy clicking 'enter', you agree to GameSpot'sįorspoken's story is one about belonging-finding a place you want to stay and a people you wish to protect. The whole situation is an intriguing narrative setup but boring or unlikable characters let it down. Frey is the only exception, making her an ideal candidate for exploring the Break, finding its source, and destroying it. This blight, which Frey calls the Break, covers the land and transforms living creatures into mutated monsters. There, she bonds with a sentient brace she nicknames Cuff and then encounters a group of survivors living in the last city that's free from the effects of a dangerous miasma. In Forspoken, protagonist Frey finds herself trapped in the magic-filled world of Athia after stumbling through a portal. Luminous Productions' action-RPG feels great when it allows you to really stretch your legs and magically parkour across its fantasy landscape, but combat is clunky and regular exposition too often stalls the action. Instead, it tells a largely forgettable story that sets up major stakes but fails to offer a compelling reason for why the player should care. Though it takes inspiration from isekai-stories in which people from Earth are transported to and become trapped in a fantastical world (think Alice in Wonderland but Japanese)- Forspoken ultimately doesn't understand what makes that genre so popular.
